The World’s Most Expensive Whisky Bottle Sold for Only $1.1 Million

In the 1980s, an Italian artist named Valerio Adami designed and signed the labels of twelve bottles of Macallan 1926. Today, these bottles are worth more than just a pretty penny: $1.1 million in value.

According to a press release, the bottle was auctioned by Bonhams in Edinburgh, Scotland, setting a world record for the highest-selling whisky bottle. Despite the record-breaking success, it was not unsettling that an unnamed buyer emerged as the winning bidder via a telephone offer, sought by a special collector.

Distilled in 1926 and preserved in a cask until it was bottled in 1986, only 24 bottles were produced, and no one is still sure of the exact number. The reason for their insane value is not the whisky inside but the collector’s value of the labels: Adami was commissioned for 12 years, and the labels were designed by the British artist Peter Blake, who also collaborated on a dozen albums with The Beatles.

The record may not last long. Sotheby’s has put a bottle signed by Peter Blake up for auction, and it is expected to raise the bar to $1.2 million on October 13th in New York.
